I WANT MY HAT BACK

Jon Klassen

The bear's hat is gone, and he wants it back. Patiently and politely, he asks the animals he comes across, one by one, whether they have seen it. Each animal says no, some more elaborately than others. But just as the bear begins to despair, a deer comes by and asks a simple question that sparks the bear's memory and renews his search with a vengeance. Told completely in dialogue, this clever story uses a simple repeating pattern and sly illustrations laced with visual humor and winks at the reader with a wry irreverence that will have kids of all ages thrilled to be in on the joke.

Blending landscape description, narrative, lyricism, and philosophical reflection into a single whole, this work achieves a harmonious fusion of scenery and emotion, where feeling and reason coexist. The author uses the Temple of Earth as a narrative vehicle, conveying his inner feelings through every blade of grass and every tree, and interweaving landscape descriptions, memories of the past, and reflections on life and death. By employing a simple, unadorned style to depict the scenery and a subtle, understated approach to portray maternal love, the author captures the literary essence of prose—where the form may be loose, but the spirit remains focused. Readers can learn from the writing techniques of expressing emotions through objects and blending the concrete with the abstract, gaining insight into how to elevate personal emotions to philosophical reflections on life, thereby enhancing their own essay writing and literary expression.

Tales of Extraordinary Folk is packed with the most "legendary" characters from the docks of old Tianjin: Brush Li, who can whitewash a wall without spilling a single drop of paint; Dr. Hua, who recognizes teeth, not people; and a master of antiques who can tell a fake from a real clay teapot just by feel... Eighteen trades, eighteen extraordinary skills – each one a master of a "divine craft." Feng Jicai brings them to life like a storyteller striking the wake-up block, delivering tales of the streets and legends of the common folk. Once you've read it, you can't help but admire them – and realize that even ordinary people can shine with an undying light.
