Fuzhou Lakeside International School held the PYP Chinese Speech Contest on May 22. Contestants from grades 3 to 5 were the first to take the stage, speaking on the topic “The First Time I Realized Adults Make Mistakes Too,” while students in grades 1 and 2 let their imaginations run wild on the theme “If I Had a Magic Eraser.”

DSC_2664.jpgDSC_2643.jpg

It turns out that adults make mistakes too, and these “mistakes” come in all shapes and sizes. The primary students’ speeches read like a “collection of adult blunders”: a thrifty grandfather who couldn’t bear to throw away leftovers, only to end up harming his own health; a mother who usually teaches her children to be diligent, yet sometimes carelessly uses the wrong soy sauce; and some adults who, despite their ignorance, speak as if their words were gospel truth! Not only that, but the definition of “adults” isn’t limited to the parents and elders around us: some contestants ingeniously cited the mistakes of famous historical military strategists and scientists… In the end, the students all agreed that making mistakes isn’t scary; what truly matters is how we face them, learn from them, and grow through the experience.

DSC_2777.jpgDSC_2761.jpgDSC_2821.jpg

If you had a magic eraser, what would you use it for? Most children’s first thought is to erase life’s little mistakes and worries. Some contestants took it a step further, imagining that perhaps it could erase minor flaws in their character to make them better people; or use it to help others and change the world: erasing their mother’s fatigue, the trash in the schoolyard, a patient’s pain… As their thoughts branched out, some contestants also realized that magical intervention is not a panacea after all—true growth must ultimately come from their own efforts.

The MYP Chinese Speech Contest explored two types of topics:

From the contestants’ speeches, it was clear to the audience that, through reflection and self-expression, these MYP students had gained valuable insights into personal growth. In an era where smartphones have virtually monopolized our attention, by putting down their phones, these students have discovered a whole new world—realizing that the chirping of cicadas in nature, the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and the warmth of family gatherings are far more precious than the world on a screen. Besides, it is precisely because one has set future goals and gained clarity about the person they aspire to become that they can confidently define the kind of person they “do not want to be.”

DSC_3014.jpgDSC_3310.jpgDSC_2953.jpg

Over the course of the two-day contest, the contestants displayed a wide range of speaking styles—some were inexperienced, others were poised, and still others were relaxed and at ease, as if performing in a stand-up comedy show. The judges provided feedback on each contestant’s unique qualities, offering not only heartfelt advice but also noting the growth of those who had competed for two consecutive years, as well as the small details—such as how first-time contestants eased their nerves and encouraged themselves—that revealed their progress. This speech contest embodied the IB learner profile, encouraging students to become thinkers and communicators, and significantly enhanced the participants’ critical thinking and communication skills in Chinese.

MYP ENGLISH SPEECH CONTEST

English Speech Contest.png

(Advantages and disadvantages of Using Devices)与「如何应对压力」(How to Manage Stress)为演讲主题。

The MYP English Speech Contest is divided into three categories: A1, A2, and B1. The speech topics are “My Best Holiday,” “Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Electronic Devices,” and “How to Manage Stress,” respectively.

The themes of this contest was closely tied to the students’ daily lives, and several contestants shared their personal experiences in their speeches: Corrine recalled her wonderful experience celebrating Chuseok with locals in South Korea, while Flora enthusiastically recommended Jiangxi to the audience as a hidden gem of a travel destination, boasting scenic spots, historic sites, exquisite porcelain, and the tradition of “sun-drying autumn harvests.” When discussing coping with stress, both Lily and Sophia cited data and examples to make their speeches sound more convincing, a point that was also commended by the judges.

Afanda, a MYP4 student, and Sam, a foreign teacher, served as judges together, evaluating the contestants’ performances based on four criteria: vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and effective communication. The two judges commended several contestants for their fluent delivery, while encouraging them to interact more with the audience, make eye contact, and convey their ideas with greater confidence.

PYP ENGLISH SPEECH CONTEST

The PYP English Speech Contest also featured a heated debate on the use of technology: Are devices in school helpful or harmful? The students took the stage one by one to express their views.

DSC_3575.jpgDSC_3550.jpg

Some contestants believe that using devices exacerbates myopia and makes people less capable of independent thinking; others point out that devices can be equipped with a wide range of educational software, and that e-books allow students to easily carry a portable library with them. Chelsea, for example, noted that devices “make learning more personalized, portable, and powerful.”

DSC_3647.jpgDSC_3778.jpgDSC_3766.jpg

Many students called on their classmates in their speeches to strike a balance—avoiding excessive use of devices while making good use of them to support their learning. Ethan seized the opportunity to mention IB learner traits such as being “Principled” and “Balanced,” as well as the importance of ATL skills, which teach us to exercise self-control and turn our ideas into action.

正如William同学所说,让我们掌握科技,而非被科技所掌控(master technology, not master by it)。

As William said, let’s master technology, not be mastered by it. We hope that the exchange of differing viewpoints will also give the audience here much food for thought!
