Last Friday, Fuzhou Lakeside International School (FLIS) partnered with the renowned local bookstore DiamondreaM Bookstore to host a heartwarming reading sharing session for families who love reading.

For years, FLIS has been dedicated to promoting reading through various activities. The annual March Madness Readathon lets students experience the thrill of binge reading, while "I’m the Author" activity give visibility to young writers with boundless imaginations. In contrast, the monthly “Reading Star” selection is remarkably routine yet indispensable: those punctually submitted reading share cards are far from disposable scraps of paper. Beyond listing titles and ratings, each card features random questions: What does this book talk about? Why did you share this book? What scene left the deepest impression? What parts would you most want to change? These prompts guide children to extend their thinking beyond the text, enriching and completing their overall reading experience.

The guests at this sharing session are all avid readers who stood out in the “Reading Star” selection. Primary Head teacher Mr. Damon took the stage first, sharing “Wonder”, a coming-of-age novel suitable for readers aged 9 and up. He introduced the novel's use of POV (Point of View) writing to shift perspectives, which subtly guides readers to empathize with different characters and helps promote empathy. MYP student Lucas, the second guest, is also one of the “authors” who emerged from the "I’m the Author" activity! From Lucas's sharing, we can see his distinct genre preferences: fantasy novels consistently capture Lucas's attention, sparking his imagination and creative drive. This book, “Story Thieves,” tells the story of a boy who can literally enter books. If you enjoy this type of novel, why not give it a try!

The youngest presenter, G4 student Amalin, showed no signs of stage fright as she confidently shared “The Secret of the Rabbit House” with the audience. This story, written by renowned Japanese children's author Naoko Awa, centers on a lady and a rabbit who can cook, featuring an open ending. Amalin shared her own imagined ending and the insights it sparked. During the Q&A session, she mentioned that her love for reading was influenced by her grandmother. She also revealed that she enjoys rereading her favorite books, discovering new layers of beauty with each reading.

Dorothy brings us the classic novel “To Kill a Mockingbird”. When the whole society is filled with prejudice, do you have the courage to stand up? What exactly is true courage? Dorothy opens with a series of thought-provoking questions. This novel explores themes of prejudice, courage, and empathy—topics that remain profoundly relevant today. Especially in our internet age of labeling, how can we maintain composure and treat others with kindness? After hearing Dorothy's presentation, perhaps each of us found our own answers.

That day, Mr. Damon and Mr. Dean (Curriculum Director) also chatted with the audience about methods to get children fall in love with reading and tips for selecting books. Mr. Damon encouraged students to read books that reflect their life experiences, building a connection to the story and characters. Furthermore, he emphasized that the key to fostering a reading environment lies in parental model—if you constantly watch TV or play with your phone in front of your children, how can you convince them that reading is enjoyable? Mr. Dean stressed the importance of broad reading and sincerely shared several experiences on building a family reading system. We hope all parents and students present gained valuable insights!

Whenever discussing the necessity of reading, we often encounter this question: What does reading offer us? In a fast-paced, efficiency-driven era, this question seems fair, yet it carries a subtle, melancholy utilitarianism. After hearing the teachers and students share their experiences, you might realize that when we open a book, no one truly knows what we'll gain from it—though we certainly hope for a good story. Yet readers who fall in love with a book always return enriched. We extend our gratitude to DiamondreaM Bookstore for their generous support of this activity. Every encounter in the name of books remains profoundly inspiring. Moving forward, FLIS will continue to promote reading. At next month's Reading Marathon, we look forward to welcoming even more “bookworms”!
