Over the years, FLIS has challenged students in many competitions.  Some are athletic-based, like Sports Day.  Others are intellectually based.  Probably the longest academically based competition is our annual Spelling Bee, given every year since 2015.  Spelling bees give students a chance to review spelling patterns and to perform under pressure, just as in the real-world.

On Friday, May 23, 2025, FLIS held its 11th annual Spelling Bee.  Nine contestants from PYP (Grades 3 through 5) participated; congratulations to our “Risk Takers” for striving after one of our IB Learner Traits!  The winner was Elizabeth Zhang from 3rd Grade, and second place went to Jack Huang from 4th Grade.  Third place was captured by Chelsea Yu from 4th Grade.  The contest lasted for ten rounds and included correct spelling of such words as "twinkle," "brother," "dolphin" and "interact," which reflected all students’ dedication to hard work and diligence to spelling word mastery.

All classes held in-class spelling bees to determine the finalists in the Spelling Bee, and there were many surprises as students got to experience pressure in a lesser situation before the main event.  All were winners, and remember – if you didn’t make it this year, there is always next year.  Thank you to all participants!

Math 24

Math 24 is an extremely popular game and an effective teaching tool for practicing and developing mathematical operations. The objective is to manipulate four integers using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division so that the end result is 24. There are three levels of card difficulty and students score 3/2/1 points based on this difficulty level.  Students must touch the card if they know the answer and immediately or lose the chance to answer. The student with the most points at the end is the winner.  This year we had 12 finalists from G3, G4 and G5. They played in the four randomly drawn group rounds with each player’s scores added up and the end of each round. The students with the four highest scores went into the final round.

The final round was played at a hectic speed with hands and answers shooting out with alacrity and determination. Frustration at mixing up an answer or reading a nine as six and losing the opportunity to score that card was swept aside as the contestants could not afford to lose focus. By the end of the final it was clear who had the most cards but did they hold the most points? In the end, Elsa Zhan of G5 won first prize followed closely by Sophia Chen in 2nd and Ivan Lam in third. Students wishing to participate next year have high standards to meet based on the caliber of all 12 finalists this year. It’s time to start practicing!
