“IB大大锻炼了我们的能力,而不是一直依靠老师”
在FLIS学习多年,聊到课程体系与教学方式对自己的帮助,Cayden同学主动提及IB MYP项目(国际文凭中学项目)。以学生为中心是IB体系的一大特点,此外,中学项目强调探究式、跨学科融合和全球视野,这与Cayden的学习风格与兴趣发展极为契合。
After studying at FLIS for many years, Cayden mentioned the IB MYP (International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme) when reflecting about how the curriculum and teaching styles have supported his learning. A student-centered approach is a key feature of the IB system. In addition, IB MYP emphasizes inquiry, interdisciplinary integration, and global perspectives, which is an excellent match for Cayden's learning style and developing interests.
“IB的老师不会把答案明确告诉学生,而是指引方向让学生自己去搜索、去探讨。”聊到IB体系对自己的帮助时,Cayden如此表示,“这不仅可以让学生用自己的方法去寻找答案,也大大锻炼了我们自己的能力——而不是一直依靠老师。”
“IB teachers don't tell students the answers explicitly, but instead point the way for students to search and explore on their own.” Talking about how the IB system has helped him, Cayden said, “Not only does it allow students to find the answers in their own way, but it also greatly hones our own abilities - instead of relying on teachers all the time.”
Cayden的班主任老师Lyn回忆,中学时期,Cayden在数学课上掌握了统计学基础后,主动提出想将所学知识运用到现实生活中。他于是着手分析股市数据,并写出一份股票分析报告。其中,他与同学分析了三只股票走势,还计算了未来投资的概率。在Lyn老师看来,这样的自发学习很好地贯彻了IB MYP的知识贯通及自主探究理念:“他的每一份报告都体现出思维的深化和方法的成熟。这种源于兴趣的探索精神与坚持不懈的态度,非常难能可贵。”
Ms. Lyn, Cayden's homeroom teacher, recalls that in MYP, after mastering the fundamentals of statistics in his math class, Cayden took it upon himself to apply what he had learned to real life. He then set out to analyze stock market data and write a stock analysis report. In it, he and his classmates analyzed three stock trends and also calculated the probability of future investments. In Ms. Lyn's opinion, this kind of self-initiated learning is a good implementation of the IB MYP's concepts of interdisciplinary learning and inquiry-based learning: “Each of his reports reflects the deepening of his thinking and the maturity of his approach. This spirit of exploration and perseverance, which stems from interest, is very rare.”
Cayden对老师的指引亦感念于心。十几年校园生涯,对他影响最大的是前后教过自己的两位数学老师:Eric老师及Lyn老师。前者经常与大家分享自己的经验,提醒学生在未来的留学生活中需注意的事项,教学风格严肃而不失幽默;Lyn老师是Cayden的高中班主任兼数学老师,Cayden认为她的课堂可以让学生沉浸在数学的世界里,“Lyn老师擅长引导我们发现问题所在,虽然会布置惊人数量的作业,但也会在学生完成重大任务时给予奖励,鼓励我们。”
Cayden is also grateful for the guidance of his teachers. The two math teachers who have influenced him the most during his 12 years on campus are Mr. Eric and Ms. Lyn. The former often shared his experiences and reminded students of the things they needed to pay attention to in their future studies abroad. Teaching in a serious yet humorous style, Ms. Lyn was Cayden's high school homeroom teacher and math teacher, and Cayden always thought that her classroom immersed students in the world of mathematics, “Ms. Lyn was good at guiding us to find out what the problems were. Although she will assign a surprising amount of homework, she also encourages us by rewarding students when they accomplish significant tasks.”
而在Lyn老师眼中,Cayden是一名具有责任感和领导力的学生。不仅学业表现出色,作为12年级的负责人,在班级管理和社交方面也颇有建树:“他总是有条不紊地组织活动、分配任务,展现出成熟的组织能力和良好的团队协作精神。另外,他非常富有同理心,总是善于倾听和关心他人,深受大家的喜爱。”
In Ms. Lyn's eyes, Cayden is a student with a sense of responsibility and leadership. Not only does he excel academically, but as Head of Grade 12, he is also very good at classroom management and socializing: “He always organizes activities and assigns tasks in a structured way, showing mature organizational skills and good teamwork. Moreover, he is very empathetic, always a good listener and caring, and is well liked by all.”
“商科是一门多元化的专业”
Cayden选择商科作为未来专业。这是一个偏直觉的选择,既受家庭经商影响,也与后天的经历有关。除了撰写股票分析报告,中学阶段,Cayden还与同学组队参与ASDAN商赛,高中时期也参加了中国银行的金融研学活动。这类模拟商业金融活动让他拥有了许多别样体验:创立公司、安排职位、设计产品、分析市场走势、了解金融在国际间的流通……很难说这些经历在Cayden选择专业的路上起到了多么关键的作用,或许它们勾起的只是对某个领域的一丝好奇。
Cayden chose business as his future major. It was an intuitive choice, influenced by both family and later experiences. In addition to writing stock analysis reports, Cayden teamed up with his classmates to participate in the ASDAN Business Simulation in middle school, and participated in the Bank of China's financial study tour during his high school years. These kinds of simulated business and financial activities gave him many different experiences: founding companies, arranging positions, designing products, analyzing market trends, and understanding the international flow of finance. It is hard to say how crucial these experiences were in Cayden's choice of majors, or perhaps they evoked just a hint of curiosity about a certain field.
但好奇心恰恰是人类最不可小觑的品质之一。“这些比赛和经历勾起了我对商科的好奇心,让我感觉商科是一门多元化的专业,未来的走向是未知的,但是我们的机会很多。只要在合适的时间段抓住机会,就可以一跃而上。”
However, curiosity happens to be one of the most underestimated human qualities. “These competitions and experiences have piqued my curiosity about business and made me feel that business is a diverse profession where the future is unknown, but we have a lot of opportunities. You can take a leap of faith if you seize the opportunity at the right time.”
学习之余,Cayden同学爱好美食,亲自下厨或品尝美食都令他心情愉悦,还能调节心情。Lyn老师特地提到Cayden的厨艺,“Cayden做饭实在是太好吃了!”FLIS鼓励学生“以知识解决真实世界的问题”,希望学子意识到他们可以对自己的生活和周围的世界产生积极影响。每年,在社区服务、慈善活动中,Cayden都有机会通过美食摊位筹款露一手自己的厨艺,因此收获不少“吃货”粉丝,其中就包括Lyn老师家的小朋友。“他非常喜欢妈妈的学校,每次参加FLIS活动都吵着要找‘Cayden哥哥’,等着吃他做的各种好东西。”将兴趣与公益结合,不仅献出了点滴爱心,也进一步提升了Cayden的综合素养。
After studying, Cayden finds that his love of food has helps him feel better and keeps his mood balanced. Ms. Lyn made a point of mentioning Cayden's cooking skills, “Cayden's cooking is so good!” FLIS encourages students to “solve real-world problems with knowledge” and wants students to realize the positive impact they can have on their own lives and the world around them. Every year, Cayden has had the opportunity to show off his cooking skills at community service and charity events through food booth fundraisers, and has gained many fans, including Ms. Lyn's son. “He really likes his mom's school, and every time he attends a FLIS event, he asks for 'Brother Cayden' and waits to eat all the goodies he makes.” Combining his interests with public service not only helps those in need, but also further enhances Cayden's overall development.
未来,Cayden希望自己可以在大学多认识一些朋友,去世界不同角落转一转,也有本科后继续升学并通过实习增加工作经验的长远计划。再次恭喜Cayden同学收获心仪院校的offer, 也祝福他在更广阔的舞台上开发对更多领域的好奇,抓住机会一跃高飞!
In the future, Cayden hopes to make more friends at university, travel to different corners of the world, and has a long-term plan to further his education after undergraduate studies and gain more work experience through internships.
