FLIS TALK

Last week at FLIS Talk, Fuzhou Lakeside International School was honored to have Ms. Lanyan Gao introduce classical music to the audience. Ms. Gao is the former principal harpist of the Fujian Provincial Symphony Orchestra and has nearly 20 years of orchestral experience, performing nearly 1,000 orchestra concerts and special concerts in various schools. It is worth mentioning that several primary school music lovers conveyed their keen interest in this lecture through the teacher after reading the poster publicity, so for the first time, primary students also attended the FLIS Talk.

At the beginning of the lecture, Ms. Gao asked the question: What is classical music? A young student answered: It is very old music! This certainly reflects some of the qualities of classical music, but it is far from accurate. Classical music most commonly refers to the formal musical tradition of the Western world, which was composed in the context of European cultural traditions from the Baroque period to the early 20th century, considered to be distinct from Western folk music or popular music traditions. Then, Ms. Gao introduced some of the great musicians who are very important in classical music: Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven… and, of course, Bach, the acknowledged "father of classical music". The moment the Cello Suite No.1 in G Major, BWV 1007 was played, were you also reminded of it? Over the years, this classic work has appeared in various films and dramas - many people may not be able to name the piece, but most likely they have enjoyed a clip of it in a film.

After that, Ms. Gao helped everyone to appreciate several instruments commonly used in classical music, such as piano, violin and cello, and some rarely heard in daily life, such as clarinets and bassoons. Some of them have thick and rich tones, while others are gentle and melodious. The students were amazed at the rich expressiveness of the instruments and the different emotions conveyed by the various combinations.

In the next session, Ms. Gao introduced the audience to chamber music, a genre of classical music. Chamber music is usually performed by a small ensemble, each playing one voice part, and is often likened to a reduced version of large-scale symphonic music, thus requiring a more rigorous expression and virtuosity than that of a large instrumental piece. At this point, Ms. Gao wasted no time in proposing the establishment of a chamber music club at FLIS, which immediately received the enthusiastic support of the students present! Let's send our blessings to this new club and hope that this talk will help more children feel the charm of music; life is long, we need all kinds of interests to light up those long silent nights and add flowers to the celebrations; with music, it seems that life has a little more consolation. Thank you, Ms. Gao, for your wonderful lecture; and to FLIS students: see you in the next FLIS Talk!
