学子们陆续返校后，校园生活也发生了许多变化。其中之一便是许多需大型聚集的活动纷纷取消，为此，福州西湖国际学校也不得不取消了第五届年度英语拼词大赛。即使是全美拼词大赛也被喊停，要知道该赛事已有百年历史，自二战以来还没有哪一年取消过。
With the resumption of school, many changes took place.  One of those changes was the cancellation of all large gatherings, which, unfortunately, caused FLIS to cancel its 5th Annual Spelling bee.  Even the official Scripps spelling bee, a tradition that dates back hundreds of years, was canceled, which hasn't been done since world war 2.  

虽然如此，我们还是举行了班级内的拼词大赛！2019年全美拼词大赛持续了五天，而FLIS拼词大赛于2020年七月在校园班级内举办，横跨数天共计数小时。

But we didn't let the changes in the school's calendar stop us from hosting our own, in-class spelling bees.  The official Scripps spelling bee in 2019 went on for 5 days, but the FLIS Spelling Bee took place over a couple of hours, inside campus classrooms on various days in the month of July.  

今年，单词按照难度分为三个阶段。恭喜在一阶（由“punting撑篙”至“thistle蓟”）获胜的选手！这一阶段比拼结束后，我们进入二阶赛段，单词难度更甚于前。二阶赛段中有出现“Hexagonal六边形的”这样的难度单词，而这已经是该阶段词汇表上难度较低的单词了！表中还有“Intermezzo间奏曲”, “regalia盛装华服”, “woebegone忧伤的”, “verbena马鞭草属”, 以及“petite娇小的”这样的单词。

This year the words were split into three levels.  Congratulations to our winners who spelled words ranging from “punting” to “thistle” for level one, and, once that level was completed, the words got even harder.  Level two had words like “Hexagonal”, which was the easiest word on the list.  “Intermezzo”, “regalia”, “woebegone”, “verbena”, and “petite” were on the list as well.   

但三阶赛段的魔鬼难度更令人望而却步！在这一阶段，词汇表上较为简单的单词为“lacrosse长曲棍球”, 但此次表上还有像“xylyl二甲苯基”, “zabaglione萨巴里安尼”, 以及 “codswallop胡言乱语”这样的单词。表上的最后一个单词是"malleolus脚踝".

But don't even get me started on the level three words!  They were insane!  The easiest word on level three was “lacrosse”, but there were words like “xylyl”, “zabaglione”, and “codswallop”.  The last word on the list was malleolus.
