School Events
Double Ninth Festival
Double Ninth Festival, observed on the ninth day of the ninth month in the Chinese calendar, is a traditional Chinese holiday. “Nine Nine" and "long" are homonyms, so Double Ninth Festival has a long tradition of worshipping ancestors, respect for the elderly and showing more filial piety to grandparents. Family plays an important role in the Fuzhou Lakeside International School community. On October 17th, FLIS students invited their elders to come to the campus to participate in a special activity for the Double Ninth Festival, or Grandparents Day.
As the Chinese saying goes, "A family with an elder is like a family that houses a treasure." Primary students wrote essays to introduce their family “treasures". They also read their work in front of the class. ECE & Primary classes offered chrysanthemum tea and pastries to elders, echoing China's ancient tradition, and giving students a chance to show their respect to elders on this special day.
Each ECE class arranged different activities for Grandparents Day. Some students and grandparents made handicrafts together and created a photo album to keep their family photos. Some classes sang and danced, followed by students providing back massages to their grandparents to ease their tiredness. One class even played an elder-child version of "Guess Who I Am"! Can you recognize your grandchildren while your eyes are closed? They surely did a great job!
Through these special activities, FLIS students learned about the traditional customs of the Double Ninth Festival, or Grandparents Day, and expressed their respect and love to elders. FLIS would like to wish all the elders good health and happiness!
