School Events
Secondary Speech Competition
The annual Speech Competition dropped anchor aboard FLIS and the secondary students last Friday. Many of the teachers and staff who were treated to the event qualified this as the best speech contest that secondary ever had!
Witnessing interesting and entertaining topics was a great pleasure for audience and judges. The entire student seemed to be fully-prepared not just with their oratory skill, but with their usage of vivid imagery and animation as prologue which brought their presentations to life. Each student was chaperoned in by an elaborate video introduction.
Moreover, the coordination of their speaking-gestures also compelled interest and effectiveness of students’ oratory. The myriad of body languages was as diverse as the number of students that conveyed them… some were nervous, some were confident, some wore solemn faces, and yet some of them were determined to imbue their speeches with felicity. Nevertheless, the audience enjoyed all the of speech stylings.
This year, the competition was "separate but equal” in the distribution of awards. There was not only a mainstream ESL track, but also an HSP/ELL track. In each track there were 3 opportunities to place: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.
Unfortunately, not everyone could be winners that day. The FLIS Middle school dominated the mainstream competition with Grade 8 winner Anny Zheng capturing first place with a speech that captured everyone's imagination: “How to lie". Second, was Grade 7's Grace Zheng, who is a recent transplant from America? In third place was another American transplant Kaiden Myers.
Not to be outdone, the HSP/ELL students witnessed Grade 10's Jeffery Chen who took the first place trophy; Elda Li was victorious for Grade 8; and Grade 10's Thomas Tong's spirited performance garnered him third place recognition.
