Maxim Gorky: “The more I read, the closer I become to the world, and the brighter and more meaningful life is for me.”

Do you know how many books you have in your home?

Books are everywhere for urban children, they may be sleeping on your bookshelf at home, hidden in your school library, or in the window of a dazzling bookstore, and the Internet has brought us closer to imported English books. Perhaps you don't know that, at the same time, books are often a more rare, special reward for children in less developed rural areas. Reading a book over and over again, even if the inside pages are torn and tattered and the spine of the book is falling apart -- that kind of feeling of it being so precious, the city children may never know.

Rural education funding is limited, resources are unevenly distributed, and libraries are hard to find. Some data shows that 80% of libraries in less developed areas are actually abandoned classrooms, and most collections are outdated textbooks. With remote areas and poor living conditions, there are few ways and opportunities for individuals to purchase books. Most of the local children are left-behind children, and their parents are away for long periods of time, unable to accompany their children and their spiritual world urgently needs more attention from society. And those vivid and interesting stories and colorful book images can give comfort and companionship to children's growth, like a friend who understands their longing and loneliness. They long for some words or a story to answer their confusion about life; they expect a book to show them the bigger world, and they long for someone to help them realize their dream of traveling in the sea of books. Although we grew up in different environments, our desire for reading and knowledge makes us a community of destiny. Are you willing to help this group of children realize their dreams?

FLIS plans to create a library at the study base in Sanming for the left-behind children in the countryside. We encourage everyone to contribute to this, and you are welcome to invite other friends to join [the book donation campaign]. You can donate books you find very meaningful or books that have brought you laughter or touched your heart to add to our library as a Thanksgiving gift to the children in the countryside.

On this Thanksgiving Day, FLIS hopes that every FLISer will take the opportunity on this holiday to give thanks for our modern life, for the opportunity to gain knowledge, for the excellent living conditions provided by our parents, and for the fact that we can have so many opportunities to get to know the world. In accepting this good welfare and good fortune, let us also be grateful and not forget to help those in need. A library is small, but it can hold a child's big dream; a book is not much, but it may change a person's world.
