the Shanghai Music and Arts Excursion

The Fuzhou Lakeside International School Fine Arts Department hosted the Shanghai Music and Arts Excursion. Fourteen excited high school students headed to Shanghai on Friday, March 8th. They were accompanied by Ms. Toni (Drama), Ms. Ashim Pherim (Vice Principal), Mr. Calvin (Vocal Music) and Ms. Alicia (Homeroom). In the evening, they went to the beautiful Shanghai Grande Theater to see the hit musical School of Rock. This award-winning Broadway musical was written by the incomparable Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. The musical features a cast of talented child actors. The plot sings and dances its way through the story of a substitute teacher who forms a rock band with the students at a prestigious private school. The storyline follows the ways their lives are changed forever through music, friendship, and courage. The students had a blast and left the theater singing and dancing all the way back to the hotel.

The students woke up early Saturday morning for a full day of art and architecture. After breakfast, they went to Slaughterhouse 1933, one of Shanghai’s most recent urban renewal projects. The building is the world’s last remaining art deco abattoir. The British design of the building is an intricate maze of bridges, ramps, and spiral staircases all built around a massive center atrium. It is heralded as a masterpiece of concrete and glass. The original use of the building is far from its latest incarnation as a hub for creative industries. The building has also become famous as a place for professional and amateur photographers to come and snap amazing shots with unique background, lighting, and angles. Here our students sharpened their own photography skills as they explored the facets of the slaughterhouse in a friendly little photo competition. They had the opportunity to look at the building and appreciate its beauty through the lens of their cameras.

From Slaughterhouse 1933 they went to theM50 Creative Park. On their way, they spotted a wall of graffiti art, which thearea is famous for, so they stopped for a quick photo shoot. Once they arrivedat their destination the students were free to meander through the littlewalkways and into the more than 100 art studios. The M50 art district has beencompared to New York’s SoHo and Beijing’s 798 Art Zone. Famous contemporaryartists such as Zhou Tiehai and Yelan work in studios here. M50 is also home togalleries for ShanghART and island6. As they walked in and out of galleries ourstudents were able to appreciate the contemporary Chinese art of today. Theywere also able to get a glimpse of the professional life of an artist ordesigner as the park is teeming with little coffee shops with people meeting todiscuss projects and sketches. From there, they went down to the Bund for aquick look at one of the most popular and iconic structures in China, The PearlTower. After a long day of discovery, they settled down for a group dinner in adelicious and popular Japanese restaurant on East Nanjing Rd.

The next morning, the students had time for breakfast and a little souvenir shopping before heading to the airport and back home to Fuzhou. Overall, the trip was a great success. It was fun and intriguing for students and teachers.
