The MYP English Speech Contest implements the IB Student-Centered Approach. The active participation of students can be seen in the hosting, scoring, selection of speech topics and judging. Around these three themes, different groups of students presented their well-prepared speeches.

What memories did the speech "The Best Holiday" leave you? Perhaps it was the preparation before departure, the excitement of visiting the sights, or the nostalgia of looking back at the photos. Three students from group A1 shared their travel stories, while students from group A2 introduced "The Person I Want to Be" to the audience. Their role models could be business tycoons, table tennis players, or hard-working K-POP idols. In "My Growth", two B1 students reflected on personal development regarding music- one discussing the impact of music on her growth and the other sharing the intangible progress he has made.

The Chinese Speech Contest, with the theme of “The Light of Growing Up”, aims to inspire students to bravely face the challenges of life by sharing stories and experiences of growing up. The path of growth is filled with confusion, perplexity and frustration, but there are always dreams, faith, friendship, love, perseverance and other beautiful things that shine like beams of light to illuminate the road ahead, guiding us to surpass ourselves.

The competition took place over two days, with MYP grades 1-5 taking turns sharing their experiences on stage. Family care, friendship, teacher's guidance, environmental changes- all of these may lead to the transformation of the students. In the moments when one brought together a scattered team, when one understands the hard work of parents and consciously takes on the responsibility of being a family member, and when one puts inspiration and passion into creation- in these moments, the change of growth has already crept in. Even a dusty guqin in the storeroom can bring the inspiration of growth for a student.

Through the experience of the speech contest, the contestants' verbal skills and stage presence have greatly improve, and perhaps, no small amount of growth. Congratulations again to the contestants and winners!

The Primary Chinese Speech Contest was divided into sections, and most of the students in the lower grades chose the theme of "If I had a magic paintbrush.” What would you paint with it? They envisioned drawing blessings, drawing hope, and drawing the beautiful world within children's hearts. Some also imagined drawing school bags for children in mountainous areas, drawing shelters for children suffering from war, or even drawing portals though time to converse with with historical figures like Li Bai and Qin Shi Huang.

G2 Lacey chose the theme "If you were a parent". What are the hilarious stories that would happen if a child were to become a parent? Is it easier to be a parent than a child? Lacey's lively performance made us feel like we were the audience of a stand-up comedy!

The theme of the competition for the 3rd to 5th graders was “The wind that is not defined”. Wind is the flow of air, symbolizing freedom from constraints. FLIS students thought that wind has a variety of meanings, always encouraging them to bravely pursue their dreams and live a wonderful life.

ATL skills(Approaches to learning skills)

ATL skills refers to the five learning skills in the IB program: Thinking skills/Social skills/Communication skills/Research skills/Self-management skills. Mastering these skills will help students to learn independently, which is beneficial for a lifetime. So which ATL learning skill is the most important to primary students? This year's Primary English Speech Contest kicked off with this theme.

Thinking skills are essential for solving challenges, and without it, several other skills cannot be utilized. Communication skills help us connect with others so we don't become mindless zombies. Research skills are like a detective's magnifying glass, which allows us to find details and solve mysteries. The contestants took the stage one after another and argued their case for the most critical ATL skills in their minds. Did any of the contestants convince you? These excellent speeches won a round of applause from the audience.
