Focusing

ECE OPEN HOUSE

Last Friday, the Early Childhood Education (ECE) Department at Fuzhou Lakeside International School held its Fall Open House. Moms and dads flocked into the classroom to study, play with their babies, and learn about the wonderful growth of their children over time!

As they grow older, children gradually enter the colorful world, sooner or later they will always realize that humans are by no means the only life on earth, at the same time, they also have a strong interest in the natural world, pets at home, the ground under their feet, falling leaves, small stones on the roadside…anything can become an object of observation. So, one by one, many questions emerged. For more than a month, the children in the ECE have explored various forms of creatures, refreshing their previous knowledge once again!

Nursery babies made beautiful butterfly wings with their parents at the Open House activity. Recently, they have been studying all kinds of insects with great enthusiasm! Besides the eye-catching butterflies, the children were also intrigued by the seemingly insignificant insects such as cicadas, praying mantis and dragonflies. We also invited teachers from the Shanhai Museum of Taxidermy to give FLIS students a special insect lesson: How many legs do common insects have? What do they usually eat? Which insects are good friends of human beings and which insects are bad friends of human beings?

Preschool kids were transformed into "animal rescuers". During the weeks of learning, they trekked through rainforests, savannas, polar regions, deserts and other areas to learn about the characteristics of the regions and the wild animals that live there. As sightseers, how do children get along with animals and how do they protect endangered wildlife? The preschool students also went to the Shanhai Museum of Taxidermy to see countless life-like animal models and it was an eye-opening experience!

We always like to say, " A long time ago" when we tell stories. Now, kindergarten students listening may ask, "How long ago was that? Farther back than the time when dinosaurs lived?" In these weeks of dinosaur themed learning, the older students not only learned about the types, size, and habits of dinosaurs, whether they were carnivorous or herbivorous, but also explored the landscapes of the era in which dinosaurs lived, and even simulated volcanic eruptions… Learning about ancient animals gave the children a sense of how far back in time - -That's a time span of millions of years! And the moment they came to the museum to see the huge dinosaur fossils with their own eyes was a new and surprising experience…

The children in our toddler class, who are new to the ECE family this year, have had many "firsts" at FLIS, including the first Mid-Autumn Festival activity and craft class, the first time they enjoyed a meal with their parents in the classroom, and the first group picnic… All the theme-based curriculums are chosen from contents closely related to students’ lives, aiming to ignite children's curiosity about their families and the outside world, to acquire language naturally in real-life situations, and to open the door to the world. In November, the kids learned about various common occupations and their functions in the theme of "Little Helpers in the Community", and then chose their favorite occupational costumes for role-play based on their understanding. Before the Open House activity, they also made lovely succulent plants for mom and dad!

FLIS ECE Department adopts the IEYC (International Early Education Curriculum) program, which is based on a worldwide survey of children aged 2-5 years old and selected 18 popular themes for this age group to explore. Guided by these more age-appropriate, relevant and interesting themes, shining "moments of curiosity" will be strung together to light up their lifelong journey of exploration and discovery. In the future, FLIS will continue to respect and inspire children's curiosity and to keep them curious and interested in the world; we also encourage parents to establish positive communication with the school and provide more help for students' all-round development!
