School News
At the end of November, FLIS TALK (Fuzhou Lakeside International School's MYP speaking program) welcomed a new guest—Ms. Su Su, person in charge of Fujian Suxin Animal Protection Center. Each Christmas season marks FLIS's traditional charity drive, and this year we chose to focus on our often-overlooked neighbors who share our community - the stray animals. With two decades of dedicated care, Suxin Animal Protection Center stands as FLIS's powerful partner for this season.

That day, Ms. Su Su introduced students to the survival challenges faced by stray animals and all that Su Xin has done for these furry friends over the years. Since its establishment in 2005, Su Xin has not only rescued over 3,000 stray animals but also actively organized adoption events, visits companies and universities to promote animal protection concepts, and implements the TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) program for stray cats.

After listening to Ms. Su Su's presentation, students from MYP4 and MYP5 also visited the Suxin Animal Protection Center last week to serve as one-day volunteers, contributing their efforts to care for the furry friends.

Did you know? Actually, the “little things” we can do for other small creatures are far more than we imagine. For example:

·用泡沫箱、纸箱为流浪动物做一个遮风挡雨的小窝;
·启动车辆前绕车检查一圈,避免轧到在车底取暖的小猫;
·在公园赏秋时不要随意捡拾掉落的果实,把它们留给松鼠、鸟类等小动物过冬;
·喂食前先了解哪些食物适合动物,不要随意把人类零食给野生动物;
· Use foam boxes or cardboard boxes to build small shelters for stray animals to protect them from wind and rain;
· Walk around your vehicle before starting it to avoid running over kittens warming themselves underneath the car;
· When enjoying autumn in parks, refrain from picking up fallen fruits—leave them for squirrels, birds, and other small creatures to survive the winter;
· Before feeding animals, learn which foods are suitable for them—avoid giving wild animals human snacks;
· Learn and share animal welfare knowledge, promoting awareness among friends, neighbors, and your community to create a society that respects and understands stray animals.

Beyond these seemingly “directly animal-benefiting” initiatives, certain actions not directly related to other living beings can sometimes indirectly benefit them. After all, all creatures are interconnected within the ecosystem. Protecting our shared environment is fundamentally safeguarding the future for both humans and animals.
·种下一棵树,可能就为鸟儿提供了未来的居所与食物来源;
·种植依赖昆虫传粉的本土花卉,不仅能亲近美丽的花朵,也能为蜜蜂、蝴蝶、蛾类、蚂蚁、苍蝇等传粉者提供花蜜;
· Planting a tree may provide future shelter and food sources for birds;
· Growing native flowers that rely on insect pollination not only allows you to enjoy beautiful blooms but also provides nectar for pollinators like bees, butterflies, moths, ants, and flies;
·Picking up plastic litter during walks means fewer animals will be injured by ingestion or entanglement in the future...

This “Fluffy Christmas Season,” FLIS encourages students to embrace their spirit of inquiry, learning and practicing more clever ways to protect our furry animal neighbors!
